Low school performance: causes and how to help our children

Poor school performance is a common problem in children and has multiple causes. It usually becomes evident in cognitive, academic, and behavioral areas. However, due to ignorance, fear that our children were medicated, difficulty in identifying emotional or physiological problems, and even teaching malpractice, we do not act fast to seek help for our little ones.

Poor school performance is not a lack of interest

To talk about the subject, we spoke with Dr. Sandra Schaffer, Director of the Psychoaprende Center and the Neuroscience Foundation for the Integral Development of the Individual, who explained that poor school performance goes beyond the student’s lack of interest or being lazy.

“Sometimes parents and teachers don’t realize there is a learning problem and are not considerate with kids. That affects children in their self-esteem. Some teachers just say they are lazy or don’t work. What I always explain to parents is that there are no lazy children, no one wants to be in a room doing nothing. Rather, the children are not having the skills to carry out the tasks in the way they are asked to do”.

What is a learning disability?

According to the expert, a learning disability is a neurological disorder that interferes with a person’s ability to store, process or produce information.

“This has to do with how information enters in our brain and how we interpret it. Children who have learning problems generally have an average intelligence, it has nothing to do with their intellectual capacity; yet their ability to read, to write, to do mathematics and sometimes social skills is affected”, Schaffer says.

Causes of poor academic performance

The neuropsychologist explains that the causes are almost always multifactorial, that is, there isn’t a single reason. They can be divided into emotional causes, specific learning problems, as well as sensory and behavioral difficulties and poor study habits.

Emotional causes

It is difficult to detect them because many times it directly involves the parents although it can also be due to external factors that happen in school, or causes inherent to the child himself.

Changes in the school environment: “The change of a teacher or when they start a new school system. For example, those who go from preschool to primary or those who change schools. You may have conflicts with your peers or difficulty in finding friends”, says the specialist.

Do not miss: Household chores that children should do according to their age

Environment: Problems in the family environment, parent breakup, the arrival of a new sibling or a moving. It can also be the loss of a loved one or if a relative moves in the house. If there are addiction problems or aggressiveness in the family nucleus. Overprotection or abandonment. Sudden economic changes, parents increasing their work activities.

Inherent in the child: These are situations that are within us. For example, a health problem, lack of security, low self-esteem. Physiological problems that cause insecurities: If I am tall, short, fat, skinny, a stutter. All of this generates a negative image of themselves.

Anxiety and depression: We usually think that children do not suffer from anxiety and depression, but this is a mistake. There are children who go from simple sadness to losing interest in things, they feel helpless or hopeless.

Specific learning problems

Reading: Difficulty in perceiving a spoken word as a combination of sounds. Even when they master basic reading, they may struggle with reading at a certain pace, understanding what they read, or making inferences based on reading. There are problems in the working memory (ability to retain information).

Writing: Slow and labored handwriting, difficult to read handwriting, difficulty in putting thoughts on paper, poorly organized text, problems with spelling.

We recommend: Let’s learn to recognize the emotional wounds of childhood

Math: Trouble at understanding how numbers work, difficulty in calculating problems and using math symbols.

Language: A child who has problems speaking or reproducing sounds, who does not pronounce the ‘r’, the ‘ñ’ or the ‘s’, is going to affect his learning because he is going to write and read just like he speaks. His understanding would be diminished.

Nonverbal skills: Problems interpreting

Language: A child who has problems speaking or reproducing sounds, who does not pronounce the ‘r’, the ‘ñ’ or the ‘s’, is going to affect his learning because he is going to write and read just like he speaks. His understanding would be diminished. facial expressions and using language appropriately in social situations. Poor physical coordination, fine motor skill problems such as writing, and difficulty in paying attention.

Sensory, behavioral difficulties and poor study habits

Behavioral: The most common is oppositional behavior. When the child does not want to do what he is asked and he does the opposite or constantly challenges authority. It may be that he confronts his teachers, his principals, or his parents.

Physiological: For example, the child does not see or hear well. Although there are no doubts, we have to do tests because a reading problem can arise from there. The same with hearing because it might interfere with dictations and can lead to a problem of discrimination, or that he falls behind.

Attention deficit: The child’s difficulty in concentrating and carrying out his tasks at the same pace of his classmates.

Bad study habits: Having distractions while doing homework or studying (television or toys), trying to learn something in the last minute, being tired or hungry, not having a suitable place for study or homework (well illuminated and with enough space), among others.

The reasons for specific learning difficulties, as well as attention deficit problems, are many. “It can be hereditary, some problem during birth (the child did not breathe well), RH incompatibility with the mother, premature birth, low weight, a bump in the head, even substances such as lead in the blood. Sometimes malnutrition because, although we think that children eat well, perhaps they do not have the right nutrient balance and that is a factor of poor school performance.

HOW CAN WE HELP OUR CHILDREN?

According to the expert, the first thing is to identify poor performance attentively.

  • There is a lack of attention. We have to talk to the child several times because he is not listening to us.
  • The child sits down to do homework but won’t sit still. He stands up many times, he is unfocused.
  • The teacher talks to him and he is distracted, thinking about other situations or there is a loss of interest.

Once you have observed one of these situations, you have to go to the bottom of the causes with the help of an expert. The person in charge of detecting and treating these problems is the neuropsychologist, preferably with a specialty in the area of special education.

“If just a psychologist checks the child, there may be gaps because he will not be able to investigate the neurological part. Another point is that many parents are afraid to take their children to a psychologist because they don’t want him be medicated.

They let two or three years pass by, but there are treatments such as neurofeedback where the child does not have to take medication; it focuses more to self-regulation and learning therapy. But that has to be diagnosed by the neuropsychologist, doing an electroencephalogram, digital mapping and computerized tests”, concludes Sandra Schaffer.

What Children’s and Youth Book Day means (An explanation for children)

This April 2nd is the International Children’s and Youth Book Day, the perfect time to reflect on how important books are to help enhance our children’s imagination, empathy, creativity, and language. That date was chosen precisely because it is the birthday of the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. We invite you to explain to your children what the day means and encourage interest and the habit of reading.

What does Children’s and Youth Book Day mean?

It is a symbolic day celebrated to inspire a love of reading and draw attention to children’s books. It was established on April 2, 1967, by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), a nonprofit civic organization promoting children’s right to become readers.

Why April 2nd is International Children’s and Youth Book Day

It is celebrated on April 2nd because it is the day that Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday is commemorated; he is famous for stories that you surely know: The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Tin Soldier, and The Snow Queen, among many others.

Andersen was born on April 2nd, 1805, in Odense, Denmark. He wrote novels, poetry, plays, and autobiographies, but he is best known for his more than 200 children’s stories. Most of the stories were invented by him, but some were inspired by Norse legends.

Children’s Book Day 2022 dedicated to Richard Van Camp

Every year IBBY, an international sponsor of Children’s Book Day, selects a representative writer and illustrator to send a message to all the children of the world.

This year it corresponds to the writer Richard Van Camp, illustrated by Julie Flett, both of Canadian nationality. This message is spread on posters that are distributed in libraries, schools, and bookstores for children around the world to read:

Stories are wings that help us take flight every day

Reading is freedom. Reading is breathing.

Reading allows you to see our world with different eyes and invites you to inhabit worlds you will never want to leave.

Reading allows your spirit to dream.

They say that books are friends for life, and I agree.

The fullness of your universe only grows when you read.

Stories are wings that help us take flight every day, so look for books that speak to your spirit, heart, and mind.

Stories are medicine. They heal. They comfort. They inspire. They teach.

Blessed are the narrators, the readers, and the listeners. Blessed be the books. They are the medicine for a better, brighter world.

Mahsi Cho. Thank you very much

Richard Van Camp

We recommend: Six books for new parents

Please don’t confuse it with World Book Day.

It is important not to confuse International Children’s and Youth Book Day with World Book Day, which is celebrated on April 23rd. Here are some ideas for you and your little ones to mark the date:

  • Have a picnic and choose a book with your children to read as a family.
  • Host a book swap.
  • Build a story with the whole family and act it out.
  • Decorate a notebook with inspirational phrases about reading.

How can we sow potatoes at home?

If you have food left in your fridge and think it’s no longer helpful, don’t throw it away! You can plant it. A garden in your home has many benefits; one is that the fruits and vegetables you grow will not have chemicals that harm your health. You can start with simple products, so we will tell you how to plant potatoes at home.

Growing our food is not only a way of taking care of our health but also of having them when we need them. The population on the planet increases, but the water and the land to plant are running out. In the future, it will no longer be possible to produce enough food for all the planet’s inhabitants.

The foods you have stored in your refrigerator will help you start your garden at home. Photo: Piqsels

Advantages of having a garden at home

Agriculture is one of the most polluting activities and uses the most water. Dieter Gerten, a professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin, says that food growing practices worldwide are worrying, so we need to take action soon.

“Currently, almost half of the world’s food production exceeds Earth’s environmental limits”.

Gardens at home are an excellent alternative to reduce the impact of agriculture on the planet since water is used better; it does not pollute because chemical fertilizers are not used. It is also an opportunity to rescue the traditions of previous generations, points out the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Now that you know some of the advantages of having a garden in your house, you can start it with a simple crop, such as potatoes.

Materials

To plant this tuber, you will need:

  • A 60-centimeter diameter pot.
  • Soil.
  • Compost: You can make it by gathering organic garbage from your house, like apple cores, banana peels, orange peels, etc.
  • Potatoes with sprouts: Have you noticed that after a long time of storing potatoes, they grow like little green roots? If you have potatoes like this, use them.

How do we plant potatoes?

Once you have your pot, place the soil in and mix it with the compost. When it is well-mixed, you will make small holes, around 10 and 15 centimeters deep, in the pot, where you will place the potato.

Depending on the size of your tubers, you can plant more than two in the pot; if they are small, plant four; if not, two or one. Make sure they are separated from each other.

After planting the potatoes, there is nothing left but to wait.

Potatoes are an easy crop that you can have in your home. Video: Urban Garden and HerbalistVideo: Huerto Urbano y Herbolaria

Potato care

Like any other plant, potatoes need you to take care of them. You will have to water them constantly so that the soil stays moist. Listen! The pot should not be flooded because you will pour excess water, preventing the potatoes from growing.

Leave your pot in the sun for as long as possible. Add compost into the pot, as this is a natural fertilizer and will help your tubers grow. More or less 20 days after planting, you will see some little plants appear in your pots.

It would help if you watered your pot frequently, so the soil is always moist. Photo: Wikimedia commons

How long do potatoes take to come out?

One of the signs that you will soon be able to harvest is when lilac flowers begin to sprout from the plant that grew 20 days after planting.

Now that you have seen these little flowers wait between 10 to 15 days (when the leaves of the plant turn yellow) to harvest the potatoes. To do this, you must pull the plant and scratch it on the ground; you will see these tubers there.

In total, from the time you plant until you get your tubers, it can take 3 to 5 months.

The Kaizen method is the Japanese philosophy that helps children to be orderly.

If Japanese culture has something, governments and families emphasize early childhood education. Children learn to develop their abilities and be disciplined from a very young age. They have efficient techniques, such as the Kaizen method, which helps the little ones learn to be organized and set goals.

What is the Kaizen philosophy?

The reality is that this technique was not explicitly intended for raising children, but it serves a lot of that purpose. Kaizen is a term made up of two Japanese kanji: Kai, which means change, and Zen, which means good or to improve, as indicated in the text How the Japanese Interpret Kaizen by Wayne Macpherson, a professor at Massey University in New Zealand.

It is a philosophy that drives creativity and better results through small, consistent actions that deliver long-term benefits. In many companies, this method has been adopted to eliminate procrastination.

The origin of this approach dates back to World War II. Japan was in serious economic problems, so a businessman named Taiichi Ohno created a methodology to improve production systems based on two values that govern his culture: commitment and discipline.

Don’t miss: Four parenting mistakes you make as a mom and dad

Kaizen Method Steps

The method consists of the following steps:

  • Pick a task that takes no more than three minutes to complete. Some start with less, one minute even, which is called the “one minute rule.”
  • Establish an exact time to do that activity to return to your routine after carrying it out.
  • Make the activity you selected become a habit.

How to apply the Kaizen method to children

This technique is so effective that it is also applied in the upbringing of children with simple adaptations.

  1. Designate a task that the children can do every day simultaneously. Try to make them see it as a challenge or a game. “You have three minutes to do it!”
  2. The task should be the same every day, for example: pick up your shoes, wipe your desk, put away your toys, feed your pet, fold your clothes, set the table, sweep your bedroom…
  3. Respect the scheduled time. Set the alarm, and you immediately have to do the activity as soon as it goes off.
  4. You must be together with your little one during those minutes.
  5. Do not increase the time until you see results.

Do not miss: Tips for teaching children to share

Why does this technique work?

Being a method that promotes the creation of simple habits in a short time, it is not dull. Little by little, and without noticing it, the task becomes a good habit.

To give you an idea of how they apply the Kaizen method in Japan, in schools, each child has a box with all his school supplies in it. When the day ends, they are given three minutes to collect their things and leave their spaces impeccable. The hustle and the fun attitude of the teachers make it an entertaining activity, far from something imposed.

Another example. In Japan, parents usually create, together with their children, a list of things that they must do every day: learn to add, wash their sneakers, or draw something. Daily goals are set, including spending quality time with family. The trick is that they are small steps that effortlessly make them go far.

Kids need routines

With perseverance, anything can be achieved, and children love routines because they make them feel safer. They are not thinking about what to do but are clear about what to do. Exercises help them organize and avoid chaos. Children feel better when routines are regular, predictable, and consistent.

A tip: Besides making those minutes fun, another way to create the habit is to motivate the children with a prize at the end of the week. In this way, they know that their effort is rewarded.

Start with three minutes, then five, then ten… When the habit is built, your little one will automatically fulfill that task. The time will come when you don’t even look at the clock, and you don’t realize how much time you have spent on the task.

We invite you to practice the Kaizen method with your children. Remember that a series of continuous improvements is more effective than one big change. Small daily goals are easier to achieve, they generate satisfaction because we feel that we are advancing, and the effort is dosed.

Try it and tell us how it went.

The Covid-19 virus is still on the loose!

The importance of kids understanding how a contagion network develops, specifically SARS-CoV-2, is transcendental because the Covid-19 virus is still on the loose.

The head of the molecular microbiology department of the UNAM Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Gabriela García Pérez, made a graphic presentation for sharing with the kids, in very basic terms, how a network of infections develops the Covid-19 virus.

Through images and accompanied by the voice of the biomedical researcher, the little ones will be able to solve their doubts regarding the healthy distance, the correct use of face masks, and the fact of having to wash their hands frequently.

How a network of Covid-19 virus infections develops:

The Covid-19 virus is still on the loose, but we can learn to avoid it!

We recommend: Resilience, a guide to raising children in times of Covid-19

Let us remember that at some point, we all had to stay home, but now that we are going out to school or work, we must remain vigilant and take into account what Dr. Gabriela García Pérez shares with us in the video:

It doesn’t matter if your community is big or small; it all starts the same, with a trip like Xuan’s! He, very excited, returned from visiting his grandparents and ran to his friends’ house, not knowing that he was carrying the Covid-19 virus.

Along the way, he met several people; however, not all of them were infected; why? Because some did keep a healthy distance and had their face masks on.

Luckily, Xuan put himself in the hands of Dr. Kati, who is a very responsible professional who followed all the protocols:

  • • She sent Xuan to the hospital
  • She reviewed the paths of the people Xuan had been with
  • She made a contagion tree (tracking the contagion network)
  • She determined the people who were healthy and kept them under observation
  • She isolated the infected people.

The most important thing is to remember that,

“If you take care of yourself, we all take care of ourselves”.

Dr. Gabriela García Pérez

Indeed this explanation is not only for kids; without a doubt that it is also helpful for adults because, although we know perfectly well that the Covid-19 epidemic has not ceased even though we have been fighting this virus for two years, it is not needless to continue raising awareness and, above all, being the example of the children. After all, it is from us that they will take the sample from the behaviors and habits of everyday life.

What is celebrated on March 18th? You can explain it to your children this way

Before you grab your bags and get ready to enjoy this long weekend holiday, your little one would have indeed asked you what is celebrated on March 18th, either because he has homework about it or because they heard about it on the news.

On this date, the oil expropriation carried out by President Lázaro Cárdenas in 1938 is commemorated. It is an important day in the history of our country; teachers in primary school made you repeat it by heart, but what does it mean, and how can you explain it to your children?

On March 18, the Anniversary of the Expropriation of Oil is commemorated. Photo: Pixabay
On March 18, the Anniversary of the Expropriation of Oil is commemorated. Photo: Pixabay

What is oil expropriation?

On March 18th, 1938, President Cárdenas issued a decree, which is like a command, to expropriate the oil exploited by 17 oil companies that worked in Mexico (most of them were from England and the United States); in addition to this order, The Mexican government took away the permission of these companies to work with the oil.

Therefore, this natural resource became the property of the nation. This means that the government manages this natural resource, from taking it out of the ground to transforming it into products like gasoline and selling it.

This decision was made because the oil companies did not want to improve the conditions of their workers, who asked to work eight hours a day (they worked much longer) and be paid if they got sick, among other requests.

President Cárdenas explained that the order to take control of the oil was to defend the independence of Mexico since this natural resource is very important for the country’s development because products such as gasoline are generated from it, which serves for the cars to move. Therefore, this president considered that the government should manage the oil.

.

What is oil, and why is it important?

It is a black, viscous substance in the depths of the earth and is generated from the decomposition of the remains of animals and plants. It takes millions of years to form, so it is said to be a non-renewable resource; that is, it can run out because the oil we have now took a long time to form.

“This material is important because gasoline is generated from it, but it is also fundamental for the chemical industry since 60% of the chemical products we know are derived from oil: plastics, detergents, fertilizers, antifreeze (a greenish liquid that is used in cars), explosives, dyes, and many more”, explains Economipedia.

Its origin begins with the decomposition of organic substances produced by the action of microorganisms and continues mainly due to the increase in temperature, burial, and time (millions of years). For this reason, it is considered a non-renewable fossil resource.

Who was Lazaro Cardenas?

He was president of Mexico between 1934 and 1940. He was born in Michoacán in 1895. “During his government, he distributed land to peasants to be owners of the field where they worked. Other actions of his government were the expropriation of oil, the construction of highways, and the foundation of institutions such as the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), the National Museum of History in Chapultepec, among others”, details the National Institute of Anthropology and History. His most significant contribution was to take control of oil, which remains to this day.

How to draw flowers from numbers

One way your children can learn to draw easily is from numbers. You can make endless things, from animals to faces or even objects. It is so simple that you will be surprised how quickly everyone at home learns. On this occasion, we found some tutorials on YouTube that will help you draw flowers.

Tutorials to learn to draw flowers with numbers

A children’s song says, “With a 6 and a 4, I draw the face of your portrait”. Well, believe me, you can also draw beautiful roses! This is a fun way for your kids to build confidence when using a pencil. You will love them.

Draw a rose with the number 2

Trace the number two and form a spiral from the little head. Then you add the petals, the stem, and the leaves. It is very simple; you will have your drawing almost finished in less than five minutes. Click play.

Draw a flower bud with the number 3

This flower hasn’t opened yet, but it still looks lovely. Trace the number three, and, very similar to the previous example, you will add the rest of the petals. The interesting thing about this way of drawing flowers is that you will have a bud ready to color.

With the number 8, you can draw a wildflower

Number eight is your guide. Trace it, and from there, you form the rest of the flower. When you color it, you won’t even notice that there is a number, and the flower is beautiful.

With the number 6, you can make a beautiful open rose

On a piece of paper, trace the number six. On the belly, begin to draw the details of the center of the flower as if it were a spiral. Close the six and add the outer petals with curved strokes following the shape of the center. Add two leaves and color them.

Here is the video to guide you.

What is spring? Explanation for children

As an adult, many things seem normal to you, and you don’t stop to enjoy them, but for your children, it is a great discovery, and they are curious to know the reason for everything around them. A new season is about to arrive, and your little ones will surely ask you what spring is. We will help you with this information.

Spring is one of the four seasons of the year; it follows winter and comes before summer. It starts between March 20th and 21st. This season, we see the plants turn green, the landscape is filled with flowers, and the weather is much warmer. That’s why the name of this season means first greenness, and its origin is in the Latin words prima and vera.

What are the seasons?

The Earth revolving around the Sun generates the seasons; this movement is called Translation. Our planet takes 365 days to go around the Sun, which is the same time as a year. As it advances on its path, the seasons happen, each lasting three months.

“This knowledge about the movements of the Earth is thanks to the astronomer Nicholaus Copernicus, who challenged all previous theories that placed our planet as the center of the universe in which all the stars revolved around it,” explains Juan Cervantes Pérez, a researcher at the Universidad Veracruzana.

“Today, it is known that the Solar System not only moves about the core of the Milky Way but that the entire universe presents movement due to the expansion and interaction of the masses of planets, systems, galaxies, etc”.

Do not miss: Seven rituals to welcome spring

Is it spring all over the world?

Because the earth moves around the Sun, the amount of sunlight hits different parts of the world differently. For this reason, spring in the countries of the northern hemisphere (those located in the countries of northern Europe, North America, Central America, almost all of Asia, and a large part of Africa) begins between March 19th and 20th, and 21st.

While in the southern hemisphere, where the countries of South America, Africa, and all of Australia are located, autumn begins.

“The tilt of the Earth’s axis plays an important role for one and the other seasons. The beginning of the seasons of the year is marked only by the position of the Earth concerning the Sun”.

Ways to explain spring to children

Every detail that your little one sees catches his attention; you can teach them how spring is expressed with very simple activities:

  • Ask him to look at the trees and plants; you can tell him how they looked before and how they are flourishing.
  • Together, you can see the colors of the flowers and identify the colors and smells.
  • Tell him that thanks to the greening of the trees, they can have food.

Spring in myths

Another way to explain to your little ones about spring is through myths. The ancient civilizations used to look at the sky to associate the events with the movement of the stars and make up stories. Spring is a phenomenon that gave rise to many myths. Persephone is the best known.

In Greek mythology, Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, the fertility goddess. She was a lovely young woman who was kidnapped one day by Hades, who ruled the underworld, and she was forced to become his wife. Zeus tried to help the young woman and negotiated with his brother Hades so that he would free his daughter because when she is with her mother, the trees bear fruit, and everything turns green.

Spoiler alert… Lessons from the movie Red

Have you ever felt that your emotions are overflowing and that you don’t know what to do with them? Both children and adults go through situations where they are about to explode. Mei Lee turns into a red panda when her feelings overwhelm her; it reminds you of those times when you wanted to transform yourself. Red left us with great lessons, from emotional intelligence to the value of friendship.

This Disney film addresses the passage to adolescence and other taboos such as menstruation, but it also has many lessons that you can apply in your relationship with your children; it is also an option to have an enjoyable time with your naughty ones.

Red tells the story of Mei Lee, a thirteen-year-old girl who goes through many changes, physical and emotional, and comes from a very traditional family, so in her transition to adolescence, she faces all the family rules to fight for her ideals.

Emotional intelligence in children

Whenever Mei Lee feels strong emotions, such as anger or embarrassment, she transforms into a red panda. She must learn that managing feelings from childhood is very important. Emotional intelligence helps to face the challenges of life positively and thus avoid the sense of frustration.

“Promote the knowledge of your children’s emotions by helping them express them effectively and thus find solutions,” explains the Federation for the Defense of Private Schools (FEDEP).

Daniela Barzallo, a specialist in child neuropsychology, comments, “Children do not have the tools to manage their emotions, so adults have to be their guide and emotional management.” She advises parents to allow children to express their feelings and help them identify what they feel (anger, sadness, fear, etc.). She also asks to show understanding and lead by example with her attitude.

Most of the conflicts that Mei Lee goes through in Red are due to not managing her emotions well. These lessons that Red left us will make you reflect, in addition to the fact that you will indeed identify yourself with the parts of the film.

Express what you feel

Sometimes you don’t express what you feel for fear of having problems or disagreements with others; it is very damaging because when you keep everything that bothers you, you become a time bomb. Mei Lee didn’t tell her mom what bothered her, so she accumulated it until she became a red panda.

Overprotecting is not good

Mei Lee’s mom took care of her every step she took; she worried she could be at risk. Although her intentions were good, as she only wanted to protect her, she put her in awkward situations more than once, which caused her daughter more stress. As a parent, you worry too much about your little ones and are terrified of the idea that something will happen to them, which is why sometimes you go too far. You must let go and trust that you have brought them up well to face difficulties.

Do not miss: The anger box, an effective tool to control tantrums

Follow your instincts

If Mei Lee’s mom was so overprotective, it was partly because her mom was too demanding of her, and she questioned the decisions she made in raising her. The experience of family and previous generations is very valuable. Still, you should also trust your abilities as a mom or dad and do what you think is best for your family.

Managing emotions

Mei Lee goes from one extreme to the other: either she keeps everything she feels to herself, or she lets it out all at once, like when she gets mad at the birthday party of one of her classmates. Knowing how to manage our emotions sounds easy but not; that is why it is super important that, from an early age, you teach your children the importance of managing their feelings and how to express them.

Respect their tastes and decisions

We all have different preferences, not because you like or dislike something; it will be the same with your child. Everyone is unique, so you must respect her tastes, clothes, music, or food without judging. Mei Lee didn’t talk to her mom about her favorite band, 4 Town, because she knew she didn’t like it, so she hid everything related to the band, and it caused her a lot of trouble.

The value of friendship

Mei Lee’s friends support her unconditionally; they accept her as she is, make her see that becoming a panda is not so bad, and encourage her to fight for what she wants and defend her ideals. Friends give you strength when you think that everything is lost; your little ones must know the relevance of friendship.

Friends are great support; they are in the good and the bad. Photo: Disney

Everything changes

Although sometimes you would like to stop time so that your children are babies forever and have them close to you, the reality is that they grow faster than you expect. Mei Lee’s mom kept things the same because she believed the changes would push them away. Everything changes in life, but this does not mean it is bad. Relationships are also transformed; even if they are no longer babies, you will always have a special connection with your children.

Do what makes you happy

In families, some traditions have been followed for generations. In Mei Lee’s, all women must perform a ritual to avoid becoming a red panda; however, this little girl broke with it. Her grandmother and aunts questioned her decision, they even blamed her mother for this choice, but later they accepted it; they realized that the most important thing is to do what gives you happiness since each one is different.

The most important thing is to do what gives us happiness without wanting to meet the expectations of others. Photo: Disney

First books for young thinkers

Hello! This is my first participation with Baby Creysi, which has me very excited. I’m Susy, and I want to talk to you about the first books for young thinkers this time. They’re specifically books for kids.

Big Ideas for Little Philosophers (Grandes ideas para pequeños filósofos)

To motivate kids to build the habit of reading, Penguin Random House launched the collection: Great Ideas for Little Philosophers under Serres, and it is aimed at all those first readers: kids between 4 and 7 years old.

Titles that make up the collection First books for young thinkers:

  1. Equality with Simone De Beauvoir
  2. Imagination with René Descartes
  3. Happiness with Aristotle
  4. Truth with Socrates

All written by Duane Armitage and Maureen McQuerry and illustrated by Robin Rosenthal.

Let’s get into the matter…

I will tell you about two of these incredible first books for young thinkers: Equality with Simone De Beauvoir and Imagination with René Descartes, which have beautiful illustrations on each page, making the books visually attractive not only for kids but also for grown-ups.

An entry that invites you to read

Both books for kids open with the following text, “A philosopher is a person who loves wisdom. Wisdom means knowing things that help you live better and be happy”. It also explains, in an easy way, what philosophy is for.

Both books contain powerful definitions that explain the very essence of Philosophy in a timely, creative and fun way: We can all live better and be happy.

The little ones in the house will like this collection, but they will also learn without realizing it.

You could read: Six books for new dads

Equality with Simone de Beauvoir

It invites boys and girls to do the same activities, regardless of whether they are stereotypes that society assigns to men or women, such as playing soccer or cooking (of course with the advice of an adult), playing with the same toys; it does not matter if they are dolls or cars, be aware that they are just toys and are to have fun and enjoy a pleasant moment with your friends.

It’s okay to cry!

It reminds them that it is okay to cry when a situation makes them sad and that they have the right to show their emotions regardless of their gender. Equality with Simone De Beauvoir motivates them to be kind to everyone, but more to those who are rejected, those who have no friends, and those who are different from them.

Respect…

It is a book that makes clear to the kids the importance of respecting ourselves and respecting others; and that accepting people as they are, being kind, empathetic, and supportive will help them have more opportunities to create a happy and equal world.

Imagination with René Descartes

It inspires little ones to understand their environment through imagination, invites them to imagine what they could see in the jungle or at the bottom of the ocean, and add on their street, at school, at grandparents’ house, etc.

As adults, we can stimulate the imagination of our kids with exercises or simple questions to make them think as Descartes said,

“I think. Therefore, I am”

René Descartes, a French philosopher, mathematician, and physicist, is considered modern philosophy’s father.

For example, out of the blue, ask your child:

  • Can you imagine a parrot outside its habitat?
  • How would you draw your hero?
  • How would you describe yourself in a starry sky?

This book invites you to understand that we all imagine in very different ways, making us unique.

Don’t worry if you don’t know Simone de Beauvoir or René Descartes; at the end of each book, you are introduced to these peculiar characters who made history and left an important message for those great little thinkers who dared to be different and defend their ideals.

I hope that my literary recommendations will please you and your kids and, above all, that they will be helpful to you on a day-to-day basis.

I am Susana Pérez, CEO at Pop Kinema, an entertainment media, where I have had the opportunity to cover various sections, especially books, one of my favorite hobbies. I have interviewed several authors that I had never even dreamed of because I saw the fact of being able to converse with them as far away or impossible.

I will share several of the books I have read with you and your children to give you a little push and encourage you to read and imagine a world of adventures with the stories you will read.
