Flag of Mexico, explanation for children

Surely you know these lyrics because they accompany one of the most patriotic melodies of our country, The Martial Chant of the Mexican Flag. A chant we have sung since childhood; we sing it in honor of the Mexican flag, one of the most beautiful in the world. Do you know how to explain to your children the meaning of our national flag and why it is our pride? Flag of Mexico, explanation for children

“My flag rises on the flagpole, like a sun between soft winds and trills. Deep inside, in the temple of my veneration, I hear and feel my heart beating happily. My flag is the national ensign; these notes are its martial chant. From childhood, we will learn to revere it and also for its love, live!”

Martial Chant of the Mexican Flag

“Se levanta en el mástil mi bandera, como un sol entre céfiros y trinos. Muy adentro, en el templo de mi veneración, oigo y siento contento latir mi corazón. Es mi bandera la enseña nacional, son estas notas su cántico marcial. Desde niños sabremos venerarla y también por su amor vivir”.

February 24 is the Mexican Flag Day

On February 24, Flag Day is commemorated; it is a symbol of freedom, justice, and nationality that represents the courage and struggle of Mexicans.

It is very important because it is part of the symbols that give us identity and pride. Since childhood, we are taught to respect it and treat it with honor; that is why we celebrate it.

The Day of the Flag of Mexico was established for the first time on February 24, 1934, the year in which the first legislation of the national symbols was approved. However, this national holiday was officially recognized until 1940 by President Lázaro Cárdenas in honor of the Independence, culminated on February 24, 1821.

On February 24, 1984, the new Emblem, the Flag, and the National Anthem came into force, and Flag Day was established.

What do the colors mean?

According to the General Secretariat of the Government, the green, white and red of the current flag have their origin in the flag of the Army of the Three Guarantees or Trigarante, which achieved the consummation of Independence in 1821.

  • White: It meant religion (specifical faith in the Catholic Church).
  • Red: It was a symbol of union (between Europeans and Americans; remember that at that time, Iturbide established the first Mexican Empire).
  • Green: It referred to the Independence of Spain.

Over time the meaning was modified. During the presidency of Benito Juárez, this meaning was considered:

  • Green: Hope
  • White: Unity
  • Red: The blood of national heroes

Although this is the most accepted version, it must be said that Article 3 of the “Law on the Emblem, the Flag, and the National Anthem” does not give an official symbolism to the colors. Hence, for some, green refers to the battlefields, white to peace, and red to passion and courage.

The meaning of the emblem

The emblem is based on the legend about how ancient Tenochtitlán, located in what is now Mexico City, was founded.

According to Aztec mythology, these people wandered 302 years in our national territory looking for the sign of the god Huitzilopochtli to settle: an eagle devouring a snake. That was the sign of having found the right place and would be blessed with prosperity and abundance.

Evolution of the Flag of Mexico

Our country has never ceased to have a national flag. According to the Government of Mexico website, four flags are officially recognized, representing the moment’s historical events.

However, if the banner of the priest Miguel Hidalgo were counted as the first flag, there would actually be 13 flags in the history of Mexico. Let’s look at just the four most important ones:

First flag: Iturbide’s flag

It was created by Agustín de Iturbide, leader of the Trigarante Army, and made by the tailor José Magdaleno Ocampo in 1821.

Photo: Wikimedia

Second flag: Federal Republic

This was adopted after the establishment of the first Federal Republic in 1823. The crown of the eagle’s head was removed, but the snake and an olive and laurel branch were added. Its use was interrupted in 1864 due to the dissolution of the Federal Republic.

Third flag: The Second Mexican Empire

The green, white and red fields were used again with the National Emblem in the center of the white stripe. Four crowned eagles were inserted at the four corners. This design was ordered by Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico and sought a certain resemblance to the French Imperial Coat of Arms. This flag ceased to be used in 1867 with the execution of Maximilian I.

Fourth flag: The current one

It is an adaptation to the design approved in 1916 by President Venustiano Carranza. The current flag was assumed by decree of President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz due to Mexico’s role as host of the XIX Olympic Games.

The official decree indicates, “The national flag and the army´s flag will be tricolor, always showing green, white and red, arranged vertically with a crowned eagle in the center of the white stripe.”

Among other important features, it stands out that the emblem stands on both sides, and the eagle’s profile was changed from the front to the left profile.

As you can see, we didn’t always have the tricolor flag with an emblem in the center; it has been evolving. And in case you were wondering… No, the Mexican flag did not copy the Italian flag or vice versa. That both have the same colors is a remarkable coincidence. Although, if you look closely, you will notice that the Mexican has darker shades of green and red.

Oh, and don’t forget that due to the detail of its design and the meaning of all its elements, in 2008, the Mexican flag won recognition on the site 20minutos.es as the most beautiful in the world. One hundred and four countries and almost 8 million users participated.

Ten childhood curiosities of Harry Styles

The British singer announces a new date for a concert in Mexico City, as part of his Love on Tour. The internet explodes with the news that excites all his fans. We leave you these curiosities about the childhood of Harry Styles.

Music is an excellent element for the development of your children; it not only has a relaxing effect but also stimulates their sensory and motor skills and their memory.

The study, Music and the child’s integral development, points out that music provides experiences that allow children to develop the cognitive, psychomotor, language, social, and emotional aspects. The child’s experience with this discipline must be playful and constant to obtain these benefits.

Research published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience reveals that children who have received musical education (lessons to play an instrument) show better performance in memory exercises and more significant visual and auditory attention.

Compatibility among signs: Is he your better half?

Sometimes, searching for a partner can be difficult, finding that special person to share your joys and sorrows. When you meet someone, you want to know everything: likes, interests, hobbies; in short, discover if you have things in common. The compatibility between signs can help you.

What does it depend on if you are compatible with someone? There are many theories about it; psychology points out that personality influences how you were raised and the everyday experiences that marked you, among other factors.

A study by the University of Amsterdam, applied to more than five thousand marriages in the United States, reveals that a more remarkable similarity with the couple is the ideal situation in terms of feeling more supported in the relationship; common interests play in favor of both men and women in aspects such as the enjoyment of new experiences, as well as the appreciation of art and culture.

Astrologer Ishtar Freya commented that several very specialized astrological studies help us deeply understand the nature of relationships.

One of them is synastry, which refers to compatibility through two astrological charts where you can see the exact place of the planets of one member of the couple, and so in the chart of the other, and determine the good aspects, as well as areas of opportunity.

“We must keep in mind that the ideal partner represents much more than just the signs’ compatibility, but we can identify with which signs you get along better”.

We recommend: Six tips to take care of your relationship after a baby

There are many factors involved in compatibility; astrology offers an answer. Photo: Pixabay

Signs and elements

Freya details that in astrology, there are four elements: fire, air, earth, and water. In addition, each sign is divided as follows:

  • Cardinal: They start something; they take the first step to explore.
  • Fixed: They give structure to what the cardinal has already started.
  • Mutable: It can be on both sides to initiate and give structure.

Nature of the elements

The energies will influence our way of relating; these are the characteristics of the elements:

  • Fire: It is a powerful energy, agile, purifying; it moves a lot, it generates change. You can build or destroy.
  • Earth: It puts the seed that will be germinated, so there is no life without earth.
  • Air: It helps the seeds to be pollinated by carrying them through the skies.
  • Water: It represents the energy that comes and goes. You cannot contain it; it is sensitive, psychic, and very fluid; if it stays in one place, it stagnates.

How do you know if they are compatible?

The first thing is to identify your sign and element; for example, if you are a water sign, you will get along well with others of this same element, explains astrologer Ishtar Freya.

This is the list of the signs that correspond to each element:

Water

  • Cancer: Cardinal
  • Scorpio: Fixed
  • Pisces: Mutable

Earth

  • Taurus: Fixed
  • Virgo: Mutable
  • Capricorn: Cardinal

Air

  • Gemini: Mutable
  • Libra: Cardinal
  • Aquarius: Fixed

Fire

  • Aries: Cardinal
  • Leo: Fixed
  • Sagittarius: Mutable

“Water and earth complement each other, just like air and fire, so that we will be compatible with those other signs”.

Ishtar Freya

We are composed of many energies which are involved in our compatibility. Photo: Pixabay
We are composed of many energies which are involved in our compatibility. Photo: Pixabay

However, the opposite signs can be compatible, “Sometimes there will be energies that complement you 100% of that sign that is your opposite, but there will be others in which you will be in shock, that you will feel that something is not there, it is missing something, or there is a confrontation”.

Freya points out that we are made up of many energies, making us unique and unrepeatable. The relationship between sign and element hardly indicates compatibility; for greater accuracy, she recommends studying the birth chart, both yours and that of the person you are interested in. 10 Lessons Tom & Jerry taught us

1. Perseverance

No matter how many obstacles come their way, both Tom and Jerry are never willing to accept defeat. They try over and over again no matter how many times they fail. They are an example of perseverance; none is willing to give up.

2. Creativity

Every time one of the tricks they use fails, they immediately try the next one. They have a great capacity for reaction and creativity to come up with new things and counteract what the other comes up with. They are always willing to try new, different, innovative things.

3. Smile

5. Work as a team

Despite their endless fights, when it is necessary, they come together to deal with everyday problems. When their home is threatened, they stop their persecution and put an end to what is stalking them.

7. If the strategy doesn’t work, try another

It’s okay to fail, as long as you learn from your mistakes and don’t keep repeating the same thing. One thing that is clear to us about Tom is that even though he doesn’t achieve his goal, he modifies his strategy, learns, tries new things, and tries again, hoping that it will work this time. He remembers that life is continuous learning.

8. Value the details

When we learn to appreciate the little things in life, we understand that the world is much bigger than we imagine and that we are not the center of everything. That will make you happier because you will begin to enjoy the details, what is truly important.

This cat and mouse share a unique bond of friendship. Although they fight and annoy each other, they complement their lives. Jerry can’t survive without Tom and vice versa. It’s nice to have someone to share and enjoy their company.

  1. Life is like Tom & Jerry

They tease, knock each other down, and get irritated, but they can’t be without each other. It doesn’t matter what life throws at you. Keep going; life constantly throws us challenges in different shapes and sizes. Defeat must not be in your vocabulary; the game is on!

The Mexican Constitution explained to children

February 5th marks the anniversary of the enactment of the Mexican Constitution. This date is considered a holiday and mandatory leisure day in the Federal Labor Law, so there are no classes in schools and most people do not work. Beyond the holiday, how can we explain what the Constitution is and why it is so important to our children?

The leisure day will be on Monday

In 2022, February 5th is on a Saturday so, as established by law, the celebration will take place on the following Monday to have a long weekend break. This policy is applied in many countries and the objective is to promote regional tourism.

The citizens can make small trips, take a longer break, do recreational activities and thereby boost the country’s economy.

Don’t miss: 10 keys to explain the Independence of Mexico to children

What the Mexican Constitution is: Explanation for children

The Mexican Constitution is the supreme law of Mexico. This is a very important book because it contains all the fundamental rules that rule our country.

It is the highest law that contains the principles and objectives of the nation. It establishes the existence of organs of authority (their powers and limitations), the rights of people and the ways to make them effective. It explains and defines the relationship between:

  1. The three branches of government: legislative (those who make the laws such as deputies and senators), executive (the president) and the judicial (judges, prosecutors and magistrates).
  2. The three orders of government (federal, state and municipal).
  3. Citizens.
It is made up of 136 articles and 19 transitory ones distributed in nine titles.

Throughout the Constitution, it is addressed in detail, the Human Rights of Mexicans and foreigners, the form of Government, National Sovereignty and responsibilities of public servants, among others.

Why is February 5th commemorated?

We celebrate it that day because it was promulgated on February 5th, 1917 by Venustiano Carranza, the first head of the Constitutionalist Army.

At first, the idea was to reform the Constitution of 1857, but as a consequence of the Mexican Revolution it was necessary to adjust the law to the new reality in the country, so a new Constitution was drafted.

Finally, after two months of debate, the Constituent Congress closed sessions on February 5th, 1917 at the Gran Teatro Iturbide, today Teatro de la República, located in the city of Querétaro.

The best thirty love phrases for Valentine´s Day

February 14th is when we celebrate the importance of love in our lives, those who make us better every day and share our happiness. We have compiled some love phrases for you to dedicate to that special person.

Love has been present in books, plays, songs, poems, and even episodes of history and has inspired great stories. But it has also been the source of numerous studies that seek to explain what it is and its role in our lives; from psychology to philosophy, this feeling has generated many theories.

For Erich Fromm, a German psychologist and humanist, love is an act of the will, in which each person decides to love, care, take responsibility, and care for another. He saw in this feeling an opportunity for the growth of those involved without giving up integrity and independence.

The bib: how do you choose the best one for your baby?

The bib is one of the babies’ accessories the most from the first months of life. Although there is a wide variety on the market, the most important thing when choosing it is to make sure they are functional and protect the baby’s chest from excess saliva.

The bib is handy at all stages of the baby. When you are lactating, it helps you if the milk comes back. When the first teeth come out, which usually happens after six months of age, or sometimes before, babies drool excessively, and you will have to change their bib several times so that it does not get wet. When your baby starts eating baby food, this accessory will be essential – at every meal – to keep his clothes clean.

How to choose the best bib for your baby

Try to choose the ones that have these characteristics:

  • Made of cotton
  • Soft
  • Very absorbent
  • Adjustable
  • Easy to clean
  • Machine washed
  • Practical, that is, easy to put on and take off
  • Durable
  • Have a waterproof base
  • Take into account the size, prefer them to be a little bigger
  • Make sure your little one is comfortable

Salivation softens and moistens the solid foods part of the baby’s diet. It keeps the mouth moist and makes it easier for the baby to swallow, and protects the teeth, among other functions.

American Association of Pediatricians (AAP)

A handy item, indispensable for your baby

Once your baby starts with solid foods, bibs will be necessary to avoid having to change them every time he eats. Yet, it is essential that you do not become obsessed with cleaning.

“When your baby already grabs food with his hands and puts it in his mouth, perhaps a bib will not be enough to keep him clean. Still, it is important that you allow him to experience new flavors and textures”, says Cristina Belén Hernández, a graduate in preschool education and early stimulation instructor, “because with this, you will be allowing him to know and discover the world that surrounds him”.

For the older ones, make your kid wear a long-sleeved all-plastic bib, or choose a silicone bib with a pocket so that crumbs and some liquid fall there. Opt for bibs that are lead-free, BPA-free, and non-toxic.

Choose bibs with attractive designs

Choosing from a wide range of designs brings out your personality. Let out the tender part or the funny side that is in you.

There are bibs in black or white, pastel colors or multicolored, plain or with prints of animals, children’s drawings, comics, stripes, stars, flowers, cars, musical notes, with a vintage, retro, or pop design. There are also some with the shape of tiny animals, stars, or balls, with impressions of a tie, bow, or pearl necklace, even with images of oil landscapes. Bibs with phrases have become a trend in recent years and are the favorites of some parents for their messages. Which one would you choose?

Currently, some bibs are designed in the form of a neckerchief, which we know as bandanas. These are very safe and easy to put on and add a touch of class to your baby’s outfit.

It is common for babies to drool and make saliva bubbles during the phase of development when their need is focused on the mouth. This becomes more evident from 3 to 6 months of age.

PANKs: Who are they?

More and more women are deciding not to have children, either for their professional development or because it is not in their life plan. However, those who have nephews and nieces spend time with them and adore them with all their hearts. They even support the parents with the expenses of the little ones: they are the PANKs.

The acronym PANK (Professional Aunt No Kids) has been used for over a decade. Melanie Notkin, a marketing expert, coined the term in 2007, and the following year she founded the digital platform Savvy Auntie, which generates content for this segment.

Who are the PANKs?

They are independent women with purchasing power and, for various reasons, have decided not to have children. Still, they have a special relationship with their nephews and nieces or their friends’ children.

More than a definition of this sector, Melanie Notkin and the marketing strategist Michael De Cicco saw a potential market in this segment of the population. They discovered that 28% of women in the United States are part of the PANKs, in whom they observed significant social and economic influence.

The study “The Power of the PANK: Engaging New Digital Influencers”, carried out by the communication agency Weber Shandwick, details that this group is key to the market. It is notable for children’s products.

According to this analysis, some of the characteristics of the PANK are:

  • They spend money on themselves, improving their quality of life.
  • They financially support their nephews and nieces.
  • They influence the lives of their nieces and nephews and are a support for their parents.
  • They have a lot of interaction in social networks and function in the digital environment.
  • Their opinion influences the decisions of their family and circle of friends.
  • They investigate the quality of the products they consume.

The importance of aunts

The help of other women in the family to those who are mothers is a little-studied phenomenon since it is a practically invisible task, indicates the research “The PANK phenomenon – Deferred maternity or a new form of maternity?”, carried out by the University National of Mar del Plata.

The study indicates that the PANKs play a vital role in the family circle, as they form the support network of the mothers of the family, not only in parenting but also in continuing their school or work development.

“The possibility of salaried parents to take their children to nurseries depended enormously on the collaboration of sisters or sisters-in-law. Yet despite their importance, aunts have been largely invisible in discussions of child welfare”.

And in Mexico?

In our country, the number of children per woman has been reduced in recent years. It went from 6.9 children per woman, in the 1960s, to 1.9 in 2020, according to data from the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (Inegi).

Despite this indicator, there is still social pressure on women to be mothers; even in some sectors, the idea prevails that motherhood is an obligation rather than a choice, explained Alejandra Collado Campos, a specialist in Women’s Studies at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

“Women with a higher academic level have fewer children, do not have them, or have them much later. In contrast, women with primary schooling have more than two children or are younger mothers, which causes them to stop studying. These data make us understand why many women decide to postpone motherhood”.

Do not miss: How to empower your girls

She highlighted that even though some ideas such as considering women “were born to be mothers” have been dynamited little by little, and motherhood is promoted as a choice, violent discourses prevail. Women are judged for not having children.

“Deciding not to be a mother is attributed to the fact that something is not working well with that woman, and she is symbolically punished by representing her as the spinster, bitter, angry, or “the one that nobody wanted”, and it is not conceivable that she can be complete and be happy, develop fully, without being a mother. However, that negative charge does not exist towards men who decide not to be a father”.

Violent speeches against women who are not mothers persist. Photo: Pixabay

Remember that you have the right to decide whether or not you want to have children; it is a personal decision that no one should criticize.

Meditation tips for children

The arrival of the pandemic and the environment in which we live makes us face stressful situations, so it is super important to encourage the emotional development of our little ones; meditation for children is a way to achieve this. These tips will help you promote this practice.

Sometimes we think of meditation as a practice for adults; however, children also go through stressful situations, so it is essential to make meditation a daily routine.

Maayan Jinich, a guide in Buddhist meditation and Mindfulness, commented that social networks make us see life “outside,” so we forget what is inside us. Given this, she highlighted the importance of spending time with ourselves and doing meditation, a daily exercise in our routine, to which we allocate a moment of the day.

“Make sure your children spend time with themselves. Do this a 15-minute daily practice before going to bed; it is a moment they will have to scan themselves to see how they feel, what they can learn from their day, what they liked or didn’t like, to begin to get to know and recognize themselves”.

The Buddhist meditation and mindfulness guide highlighted that meditation is a tool to know ourselves and understand our needs.

“If you give this tool (meditation) to a child from an early age, he will become very self-assured because he will begin to know himself”.

These are some tips that Maayan Jinich shares with us to practice meditation in children.

These are some tips that Maayan Jinich shares with us to practice meditation in children.

In our home, let us choose a place where we feel comfortable and can relax to meditate.

“Look for a quiet place, preferably in your children’s bedroom. Let them choose a little spot special for them, a warm place, where they can sit on the floor, where there is no interference so that their time to meditate does not have distractors, and they can connect”.

Make room in your routine

To make meditation part of our daily lives, we must assign a time to meditate to encourage consistency. Preferably that time is at night before falling asleep.

“Before sleeping, children will meditate and be thankful. It is a way to acknowledge what they have instead of what they lack. It generates moments of a lot of intimateness. If they want to express something, they can do it. That builds links”.

Suitable music

Music plays a fundamental role in meditation since it helps us create an atmosphere. You can search for classical music or a playlist to meditate on YouTube.

Thank together

Once you have chosen the place, the music, and you are comfortable, be grateful for everything you have; this will make your children see gratitude as a daily practice. They will also learn to value their environment and feel lucky.

“It is important to cultivate gratitude in children, to see what they do have, what they do see. Teach them from their young age to thank is one of the greatest issues that we should promote in our children”.

Connect with the heart

Once you have thanked, take a deep breath and connect with your heart and feelings; ask your little one how he feels and how his day was. With this, you will bring your kid closer to meditation, to his spiritual being.

“Sit on the floor, connect with your breath, with your heart. As a mother, you can ask your kid how he feels, what things he has to be thankful for, elicit him to tell you something beautiful that happened to him that day”.

Short sessions

In children, the ideal is that the sessions do not last more than 15 minutes before going to sleep so that they do not get bored and see meditation as something obligatory that later generates rejection.

“Short times, warm space, let there be laughter so that it does not become an inquisitive practice as an obligation, let it be a practice of joy, of laughing, do not take yourself so seriously so that the children start to enjoy”.

Get together with your family and together put these tips into practice.

Five fun ways to write the letter to the Three Wise Men

One of our children’s favorite dates is the arrival of the Three Wise Men. As we see their enthusiasm awaiting for their gifts, we remember when we were their age and our own excitement of knowing if we would get what we asked for that barely let us fall asleep. We leave here these fun ways to write the letter to the Three Wise Men.

Although the Kings arrive until the night of January 5th, our little ones start preparing their wish list many days before. There are many formats and templates to write the letter to the Three Wise Men: the printed ones that are sold in stationery stores, templates on the Internet, handmade ones, and even there are samples on apps and web sites.

Writing the letter to the Kings is an excellent opportunity to spend time with your children and create beautiful memories.

3D Style

In this design, when you open the letter the wise men will pop up, as if it were a children’s book. To make this one, you will need two colored sheets of paper, scissors, glue, colors, and a piece of cardstock.

Fold a piece of paper or cardstock in half. Then cut slits at the center of your card. With the folded side facing you, cut two 1.5 inch slits. The paper between each of the cuts will form a tab that you’ll secure your pop up art too. Tabs can be wide or narrow depending on what kind of art you choose. Make multiple tabs if you are planning to add pop up art along the width of your card. Open the card and fold tabs inward. Crease each tab at the center. They should now be on the inside of the card.

Next, draw your pop up art. Choose what will go on each tab. Cut the pop up art out and use a glue stick to secure to each tab. Fold your second piece of paper in half. This will be the outside of your final card. Glue the outside of the first piece of paper. Place the first piece of paper inside of the second piece of paper and press together, hiding the tab cutouts.

Decorate your pop up card and write a message. Put the finishing touches on your pop up card with glitter, stamps, or a fun message.

Using recycled material

If you want your little one let his imagination fly and at the same time encourage recycling, this is a perfect option. You can use the cardboard tubes of the toilet paper to make the body of the Wise Men; to finish decorating them use old magazines, or prints that you no longer need. If you have paints from a school task, use them to finish decorating the tubes and form the details of the Wise Men.

Paper, colors and a lot of imagination

If you have young children and you don’t want them to use scissors or glue, you can boost their creativity by giving them crayons or colors to draw the Wise Men and what they want as a gift.

Templates

This is the perfect option if your little one likes to color. You can download a black and white template for your children to color as they like. If your child is older, together you can choose the design that you like the most.

You can also rely on YouTube tutorials to develop ideas and write to the Wise Men.

Regardless of the style you choose to write the letter to the Three Wise Men, this is a very valuable memory for both you and your little one, since the illusion of receiving the Three Wise Men accompanies us forever.
